As reported by mynorthwest.com, on Nov. 3, 2022, three DUI crashes in 10 hours in Puget Sound resulted in three fatalities. In a patrol district in Washington state, nearly twice as many drivers were arrested last month on suspicion of driving under the influence, compared to October of last year. Unfortunately, this trend is happening in the Puget Sound area as well as across the country with crashes and DUI arrests up significantly since 2020, along with other reckless driving behaviors such as speeding. Too many drivers choose to make bad choices when they get behind the wheel, at least in part because they feel there are fewer law enforcement officers on the roads to enforce the Traffic Laws.
Consequences of impaired driving
When ingested, alcohol is a substance that reduces brain function, impairing three very important functions needed to drive a motor vehicle and navigate the roads safely: thinking, reasoning and muscle coordination.
For the reasons stated above, driving while impaired is a crime and very expensive. Criminal charges for impaired driving range from misdemeanors to criminal offenses and penalties can include driver’s license revocation, fines and jail time. Strict enforcement of drinking and driving laws since the 1980s has helped reduce the number of driving fatalities, but we seem to be in rollback mode over the past couple of years.

Here are some details about the three crashes:
1. A suspected impaired driver exited the 130th Street overpass, drove through a construction site and onto I-5 northbound where he struck two cars. A passenger died of her injuries in hospital.
